I am a coach and educator who supports folks to achieve their callings through the use of empathy. My career has taken lots of twists and turns—I graduated from Baltimore School for the Arts, (think: Fame) which changed my life. Rather than become a professional musician, School for the Arts compelled me to teach in and help open schools that would expand access to spaces like the one I had—where all students were recognized as talented, where Toni Morrison was foundational curriculum, where adults believed in kids. I eventually became a high school English teacher and peer counseling director in New York, Los Angeles, New Orleans, and discovered that it was the relationships that were driving the experiences students (and teachers) deserved.
What I now know from more than two decades as an educator, consultant, and researcher is that we do not grow in environments where we can’t be authentic; where we can’t share our experiences, say the “wrong thing,” and ultimately experience joy. Building a practice of radical empathy requires safe space for vulnerability, support to really hear others’ experiences, and the tools to support in ways that are appropriate. Empathy is more than a feeling: it requires strategy and practice, and that is the work I empower individuals and organizations to do, with joy, and a co-conspiratorial spirit.
I use positive psychology, the neuroscience of learning, and the science of empathy to create empathetic spaces in which individuals and organizations can truly grow, connect, and thrive.
